Introduction (skip to the photos)For an introduction to the various types of site shown here, please go to the Aberdeenshire page. For those who are interested in learning more, an excellent book to read is "Guide to Prehistoric Scotland" by Richard Feachem, Batsford ISBN 0 7134 3264 0.
ExamplesPictured below are just a few of the ancient monuments to be found in Berwickshire and Lothian. Edin's Hall Broch 800x600 JPEG
This broch would have been approximately twice its present height, in other words about 12 feet high. Its 17 foot-thick walls enclose a circular area 55 feet in diameter. There are three sets of chambers in addition to the usual guard-rooms at the entrance. Edin's Hall Broch lies NW of Preston.
This photograph shows a portion of the Edin's Hall Signboard, erected by
Historic Scotland. The drawing illustrates a wooden structure inside the broch,
the likely home of a local chieftain.
Loth Stone 576x810 JPEG 95KB
Supposed to mark the burial site of a monarch named Loth, it was moved to the edge of the field in which it sits, and its original site excavated, but nothing was found. The stone is 8 feet high and stands 300 yards from Traprain Law,
2 1/4 miles from Garvald, Lothian Region.
